Alan Shepard was an American astronaut in NASA's Apollo program. He was a crewmember, along with Roosa and Mitchell, on Apollo 14. During the mission, Shepard was photographed standing next to the American flag on the lunar surface. (VOY: "Future's End"; ENT: "First Flight")

In 1996, astronomer Rain Robinson had this photograph displayed near her computer at the Griffith Observatory. (VOY: "Future's End")

In 2143, the assignment patch for Apollo 14 was displayed in the 602 Club. This patch bore the astronaut's last name. (ENT: "First Flight")

In 1961, Shepard was the second Human, after Yuri Gagarin, and the first American to voyage into space. His successful mission marked the beginning of the American manned space program.
Footage of Shepard prior to his 1971 Apollo 14 moon flight were featured in the opening credits for Star Trek: Enterprise. The photographer for the lunar shot was Mitchell. [1]
The character Riley Aldrin Shepard was named by DS9 writers for Shepard and Buzz Aldrin.
