(written from a Production point of view)

Al Williamson (21 March 193112 June 2010; age 79) was a comic book artist and writer from New York City. At the age of 21, he began working for EC Comics, the publishers of MAD Magazine. He was primarily a pencil artist when he began, but quickly learned the inking trade. In the 1960s, he worked briefly on the Flash Gordon comic strip before taking over the Secret Agent X-9 strip in 1967 and working on it right up to 1980.

In the 1980s, working for Marvel Comics, he helped re-create The New Mutants, and worked with Jim Shooter and John Romita, Jr. on Star Brand. At this time, he became Romita's regular inker.

Over the years, he worked on a wide variety of titles, including Spider-Man, various Star Wars titles, and many of the X-Men related titles.

From late 1996 through late 1997, he inked stories in the first five issues of Marvel's Star Trek Unlimited title, inking the stories based on the Next Generation crew over Ron Randall's pencil art. He also contributed art for the covers of issues #2-4.

Williamson retired in his seventies, and died on 12 June 2010 in upstate New York. [1]
