For all ranks commonly referred to as admiral in Starfleet, please see Flag officer.

Admiral was a military rank, the equivalent of which was used by the service organizations of many civilizations. As a traditional grade, admiral was the most senior flag officer rank of a naval organization, senior to a captain. Admirals commanded fleets of ships, as opposed to captains commanding single ships or units. In comparison to other ranking systems, this rank was equivalent to the ground-based rank of general, or the Cardassian Union's quasi-military rank of legate.

Many rank systems, including that used by various incarnations of Starfleet, were known to use several grades of the admiral rank, which included, in order from most senior: fleet admiral, admiral, vice admiral, rear admiral, and rear admiral lower half (also known simply as commodore). All grades of admiral were generally addressed as "admiral".

This grade was used in some form by many other cultures, including the Romulan Star Empire, the Klingon Empire, and the navies of Earth.

These admirals held the flag officer grade of admiral in Starfleet:

Flag officers, regardless of title or grade (possibly excepting commodores), could be referred to as "admiral", meaning that many admirals referred to in dialog or other references where they were not seen may have possibly held this specific grade. For admirals with an uncertain grade, see Starfleet flag officers.
