- Miles O'Brien and Kira Nerys briefly appear in San Francisco while attempting to locate the timeframe in which Benjamin Sisko, Jadzia Dax and Julian Bashir materialized. The version of 2048 that they encountered was one of an alternate timeline in which the Bell Riots never occurred, as O'Brien noted that it was "not the mid-21st century that [he had] read about in school." He added that "Earth history had its rough patches, but never that rough." (DS9: "Past Tense, Part II")
Since O'Brien surely knew about World War III, whatever he witnessed in the alternate 2048 must have been worse than that. It is unknown what O'Brien could have possibly seen that would be worse than a third world war...
