United States Space Shuttle Columbia (OV-102) disintegrates over the state of Texas during reentry. Astronauts Rick Husband, Michael Anderson, Laurel Clark, David Brown, Willie McCool, Kalpana Chawla, and Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon are killed in this accident.

November

Voyager 1, a Human space probe, enters the termination shock, an area which marks the outer edge of the Sol System. The craft will become the first Human vessel to leave its solar system.

December 25th

A probe from Earth's United Kingdom, Beagle 2, lands on Mars on a mission to search for signs of life, but initial contact fails.
